You are more amazing than Mount Rushmore!

“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit them together in my mother’s womb. 14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! It is amazing to think about. Your workmanship is marvelous—and how well I know it.”  Psalm 139:13-14 TLB

Last week I took my family to see Mount Rushmore.  It is one of the most incredible engineering and sculpting feats of all time! It was amazing to see in person! If you haven’t seen it, I’d highly recommend it. One of the coolest things about it for me was an idea that God impressed on my heart while we were there.  It encouraged my faith so I wanted to pass it on to you.

What if someone told you that the sixty foot tall sculptures of George Washington’s head (and the other three presidents) at Mount Rushmore had been formed only by the atmospheric forces and natural elements like the wind, rain, lightning, snow, and heat working randomly, yet progressively over millions of years?

Would you believe that?  Of course not! (Or at least I would hope not.)

That would be crazy–a physical and statistical impossibility for a vast number of reasons.  How could random forces create such intricate details?  How could they randomly cause such an accurate depictions and proportions in these sixty foot tall pieces of granite? It would require intelligence, knowledge, engineering, and skill far beyond what the elements and natural processes of our planet could cause.

As a matter of fact it required a designer, a sculptor named Gutzon Borglum, and a team of 400 workers over the course of 14 years (1927 – 1941).  Detailed design, tremendous calculation, and enormous effort were required to create this iconic American memorial.

Now here’s the part that blows my mind and brings the analogy close to home.

What if someone told you that George Washington (the actual person) was formed by random, unguided processes combined with only the natural elements of the universe? What if even highly educated people told you that somehow non-living cosmic “star dust” randomly self-assembled into the first single celled organism that mutated over the course of hundreds of millions of years though random, yet progressively helpful changes that eventually evolved into a human being named George Washington (not to mention all the other presidents and you and I)?

Would you believe that? Of course not! (Or at least I would hope not.)

That would be ridiculous, not to mention scientifically and mathematically impossible.  The evidence at Mount Rushmore and the archives of American history reveal that the Mount Rushmore memorial of George Washington and the other 3 presidents were designed and sculpted by Gutzon Borglum and his team.  The evidence seen in creation and the archives of the Bible reveal that you and I and George Washington (and everything that exists in universe) were designed and sculpted by the Creator, God! (*Here are just a few Bible references that draw this point out: Romans 1:18-23, Acts 17:24-29, Psalm 19:1-4, don’t forget Genesis chpt. 1&2)

There are many encouraging applications to this idea, but I want to remind you as the verse above state, that you have been fearfully, uniquely, and wonderfully created (and sculpted) by God, and you are way more amazing than Mount Rushmore!

Wonderfully made with you,

-Rich
