“We will not fear… (the Coronavirus or anything else)
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear…” Psalm 46:1-2
Hello! I hope you are having a great week out there! Is Spring around the corner? It’s Colorado so I’m sure it’ll be a mix of spring, summer, and winter all in the next month…
More seriously, we’ve got the Corona virus continuing to spread and cause fear worldwide; there are droughts, famines, and even locust swarms in Africa; continued disagreements and unrest in the Middle-East; major stock market losses recently; and even a wave of severe weather causing devastating tornadoes and loss of life last week in Tennessee.
In spite of all that, this verse reminds us that God is with us and can protect us and help us through troubled times like these. (*Please pray for those impacted by this tragedy, especially in Nashville. You can also pray for continued safety for Drew Mihaly’s brother, Tony, who currently is living there as well.)
And because of these encouraging truths the Psalmist reminds us that we do not have to live in fear. He even goes on to say, “we will not fear… [even] though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, [3] though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” Psalm 46:2-3 NIV God promises that He can keep us safe here on Earth, or in His sovereign timing He can bring us safely home to Heaven (Psalm 31:15, 2 Timothy 4:17-18).
This is the same Psalm that inspired a man named Martin Luther to write the song, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God!” You and I can have peace and confidence even when facing these continually uncertain times, because as the footnote says from the New American Standard Bible, God is “abundantly available for help in tight places.”
Since our God is a powerful, protecting, and an ever-present Mighty Fortress, then let’s have a confident, “Therefore we will not fear” attitude as we seek to “rescue the world with Jesus” in these crazy times!
In His shelter with you,
–Rich
